A Woman´s Punishment
There is great poverty in Sweden and when the maid Maja Lisa gets a job at
a rectory, she thinks that her happiness has finally arrived. But in a society
where the church and men have power, Maja Lisa is repeatedly exploited. When
she has children, she is forced to leave her job at the rectory.
Several years later, she gets a job at Gimmene Manor, where she meets the
handsome Major Gyllensvaan. They fall in love at once and secretly begin a
relationship that ends in disaster. When Maja Lisa becomes pregnant again, she
loses her job and is displaced by the villagers. Together with her son, she
seeks, broken down and desperate, protection in a cabin in the woods where she
is forced against her will to commit crimes that leads to a terrible
punishment.
A Woman's Punishment is a gripping and tragic love story about a woman's
fate in the 19th century. It is the first novel in a series of 3 independent
books, that takes place between the years 1813 and 1960 and is based on a true
family history.
The Break-up
The young crofter girl Edla thinks she has met the great love of her life.
She becomes pregnant and marries the father of the child. But her husband, the
soldier Andersson, turns out to be someone other than she thought he was. He is
a man who both oppresses and deceives.
When he gets a job as a driver at the estate of the pharmacist Hjalmar Lind
in the city of Borås, he leaves his military service and moves with the family
from the countryside into the city. Mr Lind tells Edla about the workers' poor
conditions in the factories and it arouses her interest of women's conditions
in life. She wakes up and begins to question her marriage.
When the children have left home, Edla is feeling lonely. She contacts her noble half-cousin Augusta Gyllensvaan in Stockholm. The meeting between the two women is the beginning of a deep friendship and together they seek their common history.
The break-up is about friendship, liberation and the struggle for women's rights in Sweden in the early 20th century. It is the second novel in this historic series, which takes place between the years 1813 and 1960 and which is based on a true family history.
The Way There
Anna wants more with her life than working in the kitchen at Hotel du Nord
in the small city of Borås and emigrates to America as a single woman. In
Chicago, she gets a job as a maid and gets to know another Swedish woman,
Karin. Together, they explore the city where both honest people and criminals
live.
Anna feels rootless and eventually she seeks her way further west. In
Hollywood, she gets a job as a cook in the movie mogul Samuel Goldwyn's home.
There she serves movie stars like Charlie Chaplin and Marlene Dietrich and one
night Greta Garbo looks for her in the kitchen. The wife in the house, the
actress Frances Howard Goldwyn, becomes Anna's best friend and in the evenings
she sneaks in to Annas room to talk about her problems. Anna likes to listen,
but her own worries, and the secret she has carried since leaving Sweden, is
something she keeps to herself. But then one day she gets a letter and Anna
decides to dare to take the steps towards the dream she has had for so long.
This story is about rootlessness and dreams, but also about the love all
people need.
